design As designers we should strive to be ‘creators of meaning’ instead of ‘creators of materiality’. Meaning is created through responding to people and their physical and emotional needs not through surface level aesthetics. sustainability Sustainability is becoming an increasingly difficult word to use effectively. The market is becoming a breeding ground of...

❝ In seeking a moral equivalent of consumerism it is our challenge to use our capabilities to awaken the higher ranges of each person’s spiritual energy, and to produce objects and communications that are filled with value. Should designers work toward the end of aspirational consumer culture? Ultimately, I’m not sure there is any other choice. ❞via: Hugh Graham

you might notice the new them I’ve got up and running. Check out the links up top. A problem with the update: I went ahead and upgraded to 500 px width photos….in doing so any old manually coded photos will not match the new ones widths. Thanks to topherchris for providing a theme to mess around with.

You may remember this cup of coffee. After having another cup on another trip through the Copenhagen airport I found out what makes the unique low contrast rosetta. Instead of putting the powder in with the shot of espresso, the milk is mixed to make chocolate milk before it is steamed and poured in the cup.

While waiting for tumblr to stop sucking and let me upload some photos. [such a rare occurrence, I’ll forgive it] I will bring your attention to a disturbing quote. [warning: rant beginning] ❝ The government itself has calculated that around 2000 people a year are killed because of those CAFÉ standards and our cheerful government has just voted to increase them, to make cars lighter,...

food for thought
gravitysleeps: experience > aesthetics The question though is where does experience and aesthetics collide? Aesthetics effect the visual perception of an object and in turn the experience. That said, aesthetics as a hollow endeavor is unfortunately a common perception of ID and needs to be fought whole-heartily.

This is a bit of a hodge-podge [sp?] of a post, but why split things up when there is no reason. tea musings Yes once again I am writing about tea and sweetening it with chunk [or comb-in] honey. I’ve been drinking it like a madman lately due to a heinous head-cold I’ve developed. [I blame this post] and have been noticing new things with each sip. The new discovery? Well as soon as...

Recently I purchased a comb-inn pot of honey to sweeten my tea and have noticed something extraordinary in cup. The wax that is left in the honey melts into small floating beads that slowly rise to the surface. The timing is very sensitive as the wax only melts went the very close to boiling, if you do not sweeten the tea soon enough you only get a selection of flakes at the surface.

I have found I have a split personality when it comes to design beliefs. I appreciate beauty for the sake of beauty, but I also cannot support a product that dose not fulfill its function well. My only thought is that these two areas co-exist in my mind as beauty’s sole purpose is the enrichment of lives and in this it fulfills its function.
